2020 Artists of Promise - Fashion and Costume Design Competition



Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsor a districtwide competition to encourage and recognize student achievement in the following categories:

  • Fashion Design
  • Costume Design

Winning students will be selected to have their work shown on stage at the Artists of Promise on April 23, 2020, at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix, AZ. 

Competition Details

Fashion Design

  • Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories.
  • To apply for this category, the outfit should be a complete look that can be modeled.
  • Accessories may be submitted if they complement the entered outfit.

Costume Design

  • Costume design is the fabrication of clothing and the overall appearance of a character or performer.
  • To apply for this category, the costume should convey a complete look of a performer.
  • Accessories may be submitted if they complement or complete the costume and performer.

Applicants are limited to submitting One Entry Per Category.  An entry constitutes one complete garment/outfit for wearable apparel or stage/event appearances.

Attach a sketch, illustration or photo of the outfit to be submitted with the application submission.

There will be No Substitutions or Changes accepted After Submission of the application -- No Exceptions.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Students must be enrolled in two (2) fashion classes for credit at any Maricopa Community College during the 2019-2020 school year.
  • Only one complete outfit per application.
  • Only one entry per student per category
  • Your submission must be approved by your program director and will be disqualified if submitted without permission.

Submission and Judging Process

Entry Process Opens: January 6, 2020
Student Entry Deadline:  March 20, 2020

  • Student Competition Form (online) 
  • Both fashion design and costume design must be original student work developed by the student applicant. 
  • Applicants will be notified via their respective college program directors by March 23, 2020, with assigned appointments for in-person adjudication.
  • Modeling and construction competition will take place in person at Mesa Community College on Friday, March 27, 2020. This half-day event will be adjudicated by professionals in the fashion, apparel and costuming fields and all applicants will receive feedback.
  • Failure to appear at the appointed time will result in withdrawal from the competition.


  • First place work in each category will be performed at the Artists of Promise performance scheduled for April 23, 2020. In addition, they will be expected to participate in the mandatory dress rehearsal on April 22, 2020. Both occur at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix, AZ.
  • All first-place winners MUST attend both the dress rehearsal and performance.
  • All awards will be issued via U.S. Mail shortly after the Artists of Promise.  
    • $300 for first place;
    • $200 for second place; 
    • $100 for third place
