  • Costume Design
  • Sustainable Design (Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle)

Winning students will be selected to have their work shown at the Virtual Artists of Promise Gala in April 2022.

Competition Details

Fashion Design

  • Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics, and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories.
  • To apply for this category, the outfit must have a complete look that can be modeled.
  • Accessories may be submitted if they complement the entered outfit.
  • Attach an illustration of the design to be submitted with the application submission.

Costume Design

  • Costume design is the fabrication of clothing and the overall appearance of a character or performer.
  • To apply for this category, the costume must convey a complete look of a performer.
  • Accessories may be submitted if they complement or complete the costume and performer.
  • Attach an illustration of the design to be submitted with the application submission.

Sustainable Design

  • Sustainable design is the developed result of repurposed materials and fashion creativity. This category requires that the outfit be a complete look that can be modeled.
  • All materials must be taken from gently-used garments that you will recycle as they become the foundation of the garment creation. NO NEW material may be added—only material from used, pre-made garments.
  • Thread, interfacing, and zippers will be the ONLY NEW materials allowed in construction.
  • The designer will first take front-view & back-view photos of the garment(s) to recycle and use for the design creation. These photos will be submitted with the design creation for judging.
  • All materials and notions removed from gently-used garments to be placed on the design creation (buttons, trim, etc), also need to be photographed on their original garments before removal. These photos will be submitted with the design creation for judging.
  • After the design and construction of the new garment, the designer will take front-view back-view photos for submission, in addition to the modeling requirements.
  • All photos and sketches will be submitted with the original design at the time of the judging process.

Applicants are limited to submitting One Entry per Category.  An entry constitutes one complete garment/outfit for wearable apparel or stage/event appearances.
