2020 Artists of Promise - Dance Competition

Overview

Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsor a districtwide competition to encourage and recognize student achievement in the following categories:

  • Choreography (solo and group)
  • Performance (solo and group)

Winning students will be selected to perform at the Artists of Promise on April 23, 2020, at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix, AZ. 

Competition Details

Solo and Group Choreography

  • Solo Choreography: Choreography must be original student work developed by the student applicant. 
  • Group Choreography (groups are comprised of two or more dance participants):  Choreography must be original student work developed by the student applicant. Choreographers and dancers must be students taking a for-credit dance class at the Maricopa Community Colleges during the 2019-2020 school year. Applicants are limited to submitting one choreography entry per category in the Choreography Competition (solo and group). There will be no substitutions or changes accepted after submission of the application -- no exceptions.

Time limits:

  • Solo Choreography: Minimum of three (3) minutes; Maximum of seven (7) minutes.
  • Group Choreography: Minimum of three (3) minutes; Maximum of seven (7) minutes.  Please note that dancers are not eligible for awards. All awards are made to the Choreography Competition applicant.

  • Solo Performance: Choreography must be student work and not created by faculty.  The dancer must be a student taking a for-credit dance class at the Maricopa Community Colleges during the 2019-2020 school year. Full-time or adjunct faculty, who may be enrolled in college courses, are NOT eligible to apply or perform in the competition as a student. Eligibility Requirements

  • Students must be enrolled in a for-credit dance class at any Maricopa Community College during the 2019-2020 school year.
  • Full-time or adjunct faculty, who may be enrolled in college courses, are NOT eligible to apply to the competition as a student.
  • There may be only one entry submitted per application. 
  • The same work may be submitted for solo choreography and solo performance OR group choreography and group performance.

Submission and Judging Process

Entry Process Opens: January 11, 2020
Student Entry Deadline:  February 5, 2020

  • All dance students must have prior approval by the listed College Contact before submitting a Student Competition Form 
  • Complete and Submit a Student Competition Form (online) 
  • There are solo and group categories in both dance performance and choreography.
  • Applicants will be notified via their respective college dance coordinators by February 5, 2020, with assigned appointments for in-person adjudication.
  • Performance competition will take place in person at Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday, February 15, 2020.
  • Failure to appear at the appointed time for your competition performance will result in withdrawal from the competition.

Awards

  • First place work in each category will be performed at the Artists of Promise performance scheduled for April 23, 2020. In addition, they will be expected to participate in the mandatory dress rehearsal on April 22, 2020. Both occur at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix, AZ.
  • All first-place winners MUST attend both the dress rehearsal and performance.
  • All awards will be issued via U.S. Mail shortly after the Artists of Promise. (Groups will share award)
    • $300 for first place; 
    • $200 for second place; 
    • $100 for first place
